The Grant Committee of the Skolkovo Foundation approved the grant of 68.79 mln. RUR to Connector Optics Technologies LLC

The Grant Committee of the Skolkovo Foundation approved the grant of 68.79 mln. RUR to Connector Optics Technologies LLC for development of 4x25 Gbit/s active optical cable for supercomputer applications.

On February 20, 2013 the Grant Committee of the Skolkovo Foundation approved   the grant of 68.79 mln. RUR to Connector Optics Technologies LLC (the resident of the Skolkovo Innovation Centre) in the frame of the project focused on developing of active optical cable (AOC) for supercomputer applications with the data transfer rate > 25 Gbit/s per channel. Co-financing of the project will be provided by the parent company Connector Optics LLC. Total project budget will be 137.58 mln. RUR and total duration of the project ? 2 years.

Active optical cables of Connector Optics Technologies will be developed based on VCSELs and p-i-n photodiodes of Connector Optics. The key innovative characteristic of the new product is increase of the data transfer rate from 56 Gbit/s up to 100 Gbit/s via AOC keeping the power consumption and price at the same level.

“Optical interconnects with the data transfer rate of 25 Gbit/s per channel are obligatory for supercomputers of the next generation. There is a high demand on such AOCs in Russia as well including the implementation of strategic objectives for the State, said Connector Optics Technologies CTO Leonid Karachinsky. Existence of significant domestic demand on high-speed AOCs would allow our company to create a basis for the future global market penetration”.

Nowadays the AOC market grows rapidly, both in quantitative and in monetary terms. According to the report of IGI Group (Active Optical Cable Market Report 2011, IGI Consulting Inc.), growth of the market up to 29.5 million units per year is expected by 2015, which is more than 40 bln. RUR a year. The AOC market for supercomputer applications is 3.5 bln. RUR (2011), projected growth rates are about 20 percent per year according to the forecast until 2015 (in Russia 100 mln. RUR and 80%, correspondingly).
